Introduction to the Events by Whim Design Philosophy

There’s a kind of magic that happens when design meets emotion. It’s not about following trends or chasing Pinterest boards, but rather creating something that feels alive and deeply personal. Events by Whim, founded in 2012 by Alisha Chadee, has built its reputation on this belief. Known for her modern romantic style and expertise with fusion weddings, she creates designs that blend classic timeless elements with unique twists for couples across the Greater Toronto Area and Calgary.

Every detail has a purpose in good wedding design, especially when blending cultures. The Whim approach is rooted in storytelling and intention, where textures, tones, and lighting all work together to shape the experience. The result is a celebration that feels effortless but looks editorial. It’s why Events by Whim has become a go to for couples looking for a luxury wedding planner who can bring modern romance to life in a way that still feels like them.

Let's dive into Alisha's brain and learn about what goes into her process (#3 really hits home!)

1. What defines a luxury wedding today?

At EBW this is defined by intention. Opulence isn’t defined by one aesthetic, we see many styles of weddings that are luxurious. The true mark of a luxury wedding is based on how deliberately every choice is made. It starts with a couple who are aligned and making decisions together. They focus on creating an experience that considers how guests will feel from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave. The day is about them, but the celebration is focused on the guest experience. Comfort, clarity, and flow are thoughtfully considered through every personal touch added to the day. Don’t let social media fool you - luxury is less about how much you spend and more about the care behind every decision and how that care creates an unforgettable experience for the ones you love.

2. Bringing together culture and love stories with intention

At the very start of our planning journey together, we begin with what we call a vision meeting. It is our chance to see the wedding through our couple’s eyes and get to know who they are at their core. We ask about the people who influence them, from family and friends to the designers and aesthetic they gravitate toward. We speak at length about how they interpret their cultures, what they do for fun and what feels most like home to them. Culture shows up in many ways, and the most meaningful expression is always the most authentic one. It’s healthy to identify with all, some or none of your cultural background. For some that may look like music, food, textiles and entertainment. For others it may be through ritual. What our role is as planners, is to honour whatever that looks like for each couple and weave it into the wedding in a way that feels honest to the couple.

3. 2026 wedding design trends to watch or skip

I love seeing drapery used in a soft, elevated way. Textured florals are still going strong. I love using when our couples plan delicious and visually beautiful meals with the catering team. Paired with the right place settings, the dining experience becomes an artistic experience. Illustrations in stationery and signage are also having a moment and I love when they become part of the decor. I’m really loving that couples are using these elements to drive the storytelling side of the wedding experience for guests, allowing them a peek into who they are behind closed doors and how their story has evolved over the years. Another personal favourite of mine is the shift of wedding cakes and desserts. I’m loving the smaller cakes with lambeth piping, long and low cakes vs traditional tall cakes, and alternatives like table-sized tiramisus.

Trends are fun, and I think it is fine for couples to include trendy elements if also aligns authentically who they are, with the guest experience, and doesn’t become a photo moment that interrupts the actual flow of the day. Specific examples that I am seeing start to fade are bows and ruffles on everything, multiple outfit changes (unless culturally relevant) and social media-friendly decor pieces that don’t tie into the overall aesthetic or relevancy of the wedding.

4. Creating weddings that look effortless yet feel unforgettable

The secret sauce is really thoughtful preparation that begins long before the wedding day. Any beautifully designed wedding that looked effortless is actually the result of meticulous planning alongside clear communication with an excellent vendor team. Our secret sauce at EBW is that we pair a design team with a planning team to create a seamless experience on both sides. This is how we make it look effortless. What makes any wedding unforgettable comes from personal touches, an atmosphere that is welcoming to guests, and that the hospitality that is put forward makes those invited feel cared for.

5. The one piece of planning advice that changes everything

The best advice I can give any couple just starting their planning journey is this. Before you look at a single venue or colour palette, sit down together and get aligned on the big picture of your wedding day. Talk about what matters most to each of you and what you are less interested in. This helps you define your priorities with clarity. Then discuss what you can realistically invest in your wedding experience in relation to your guest count. Be honest about who gets a say in the decisions and how much influence they should have. When you are clear on these points from the beginning, the process feels calmer, you move as a team on your first major group project, and the final celebration becomes a true reflection of the two of you rather than a collection of trends or an attempt to keep other people happy.

If you’re planning a wedding that feels personal, design-forward, and unforgettable, Events by Whim is the team that makes it happen. Every wedding they design tells a story, and every story starts with a conversation. So let's connect.
